Lake Travis Sand Bass Run

Springtime is the most exciting time of the year for bass anglers. The lakes, rivers, streams, and creeks are stirring back to life with the promise of great fishing adventures and big catches.

The Lake Travis sand bass run is a popular activity. Schools of bass are usually migrating upstream to spawn at this time. Lake Travis is also one of the great manmade reservoirs in Texas with hundreds of shoreline miles, rivers, tributaries, streams, and creeks teeming with bass in spring.

When Does the Sand Bass Run Start?

The best time to catch sand bass, also referred to as silver bass, is between February to April when the lake temperature and weather begin warming up after the cold winter months.

The fish are also migrating from the cold deep waters of the lake to spawn in the warmer and shallow rivers, streams, and creaks. They follow a similar migration pattern in large schools and are therefore easy to catch.

Where Do You Go to Fish the Sand Bass Run?

The best places to catch white bass are in big and small rivers, streams, and creeks feeding into the lake. The locations can be miles upriver or even yards from the lake. It is easy to find access to the fishing spots from the road or park.

At the mouth of the creeks and tributaries, the female sand bass are preparing to spawn in the warm waters. They are also quite easy to catch at this time of the year.

The best spots for fishing sand bass in Lake Travis are in the major creek arms and in the Pedernales River. The lower lake from the dam to the mouth of Sandy Creek is also alive with bass around this time.

What Lures Should You Use for The Sand Bass Run?

There are many types of good lures that you can use for the sand bass run. The best examples include roadrunners, white swimbaits, and crappie jigs.

Others include Zara Spooks, Jumping Minnows, Pop-Rs, and suspended jerk bait. You may also want to try double willow leaf spinnerbaits which can provide a good catch.

There is also a variety of artificial bait with a remarkable performance such as sinking metal spoons, roboworm straight worm bait, tube baits like the green pumpkin bait, deep-troll plugs, knob tails, and forktail plastics.

All these are designed with fluorescent colors and other features like the ability to vibrate which inevitably entice and attract fish.

What Gear Should You Pack for Creek Fishing?

For the best fishing experience, always be prepared with the right gear before you leave your home or camping tent. A water habitat is home to numerous insects, reptiles, and fish.

Remember to arm yourself with bug repellants and good boots to protect you from snake bites. Always carry a pocket knife and flashlight when you go fishing.

Your fishing gear should obviously include a fishing rod of your preferred length and weight, and stringers for carrying your catch, drinking water, a 50-feet paracord, pliers, and a good fishing backpack to carry your gear.
